Myles Spar, MD, MPH is both the Medical Director and the Director of the Men’s Clinic at the Akasha Center. Dr. Spar is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a specialist in Integrative medicine. He has trained as a fellow in Integrative Medicine with Andrew Weil, MD at the University of Arizona. In addition to his practice at the Akasha Center, Dr. Spar directs the Integrative Medicine at the Venice Family Clinic, the largest free clinic in the United States.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Spar graduated Magna cum laude from Tufts University. After a year of research at Harvard Medical Center, Dr. Spar attended the University of Michigan Medical School, from where he graduated in 1993. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Tulane University and then pursued a fellowship in Health Services Research at UCLA while earning a Masters in Public Health.

Having worked as a humanitarian with Doctors without Borders in the field and on the board of directors, Dr. Spar brings a broad perspective to his work as a physician. He views his role as a partner with his patients, working with them to maintain optimal health, whether or not that patient is dealing with chronic conditions. He has a strong commitment to both evidence-based practice and a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to healing.

Dr. Spar is committed to treating the causes of common conditions that can affect all men such as declining libido, erectile dysfunction, chronic prostatitis, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. He works with each patient to identify physical, emotional or environmental factors involved and to address whatever issues arise, utilizing western-based and proven complementary approaches often including nutritional, lifestyle and mind-body interventions. Using such approaches, coupled with a focus on the unique needs of each particular patient, there is much that can be done to minimize the effects of disease or of aging on men’s health and feeling of well-being.

As a faculty member of the UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Spar continues to teach medical students and residents and to engage in research on the care of patients with chronic disease and on Integrative Medicine. He has published and presented on issues related to integrative medicine ranging from the use of probiotic supplements to the use of a multi-disciplinary approach to patients with chronic pain.
